Step 1: Go to the Gumroad Page

Open your browser and visit:

You will see the product page with:

Purchase button

Take a moment to review the features and preview images to make sure the theme fits your needs.

Step 2: Click "I Want This"

Click the I Want This button on the Gumroad page. A checkout form will appear.

Gumroad accepts the following payment methods:

Credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express)
Debit card
PayPal
Apple Pay
Google Pay

Choose the payment method that works best for you.

Step 3: Complete the Payment

Fill in your payment information. The price is $79 — this is a one-time payment. There are no recurring charges.

Double-check your email address before submitting. This is where your download link will be sent.

Click Pay to complete the purchase.

Step 4: Download Your Source Code

After successful payment, you can download the source code in three ways.

Option A: From the confirmation page Gumroad shows a download button directly on the confirmation page. Click it to download the ZIP file.

Option B: From your email Check your email inbox for a message from Gumroad. It contains a download link. If you do not see it, check your spam or promotions folder.

Option C: From your Gumroad library Log in to your Gumroad account at https://gumroad.com/library to access all your purchases at any time.

Step 5: Extract the ZIP File

The download is a ZIP file. Extract it to a folder on your computer.

Example locations:

Windows: C:\Users\YourName\Projects\gatsbycar
Mac: /Users/YourName/Projects/gatsbycar
Linux: /home/yourname/projects/gatsbycar

Inside the folder, you will find:

src/ — source code (React components, pages, templates)
content/ — content files (JSON data and Markdown articles)
static/ — static files (images, favicon, admin config)
package.json — project dependencies and scripts
gatsby-config.js — Gatsby configuration
gatsby-node.js — Gatsby build logic
README.md — quick start guide

Step 6: Keep Your Receipt

Save your Gumroad receipt. It contains your order number and download link. You will need it if you ever lose your files or need to re-download.

How to Install the Theme

This guide will help you set up your development environment and run GatsbyCar on your computer. If you are new to web development, do not worry — every step is explained in detail.

What You Need Before Starting

Make sure you have:

A computer running Windows, Mac, or Linux
An internet connection
About 30 minutes of free time
The GatsbyCar source code folder (from Documentation 1)

Step 1: Install Node.js

Gatsby requires Node.js version 18 or higher. Node.js is a runtime that allows you to run JavaScript outside the browser.

Download Node.js:

Open your browser and go to https://nodejs.org
You will see two download buttons: LTS and Current
Click the LTS button (LTS means Long Term Support — it is the most stable version)
The installer will download automatically

Install Node.js:

Open the downloaded installer file
Follow the installation wizard
Accept the license agreement
Keep all default settings
Click Install
Wait for the installation to complete
Click Finish

Verify the installation:

Open your terminal
- Windows: Press Windows key, type cmd, press Enter
- Mac: Press Cmd + Space, type terminal, press Enter
- Linux: Press Ctrl + Alt + T
Type the following command and press Enter:

node -v

You should see something like v18.17.0 or higher. If you see an error, Node.js is not installed correctly.

Type the following command and press Enter:

npm -v

You should see something like 9.6.7 or higher. npm comes bundled with Node.js.

Step 2: Install VS Code

VS Code is a free code editor that makes editing your theme easy. You will use it to open the project folder and run terminal commands.

Download VS Code:

Open your browser and go to https://code.visualstudio.com
Click the Download button for your operating system
The installer will download automatically

Install VS Code:

Open the downloaded installer
Follow the installation wizard
Accept the license agreement
Keep all default settings
Click Install
Wait for the installation to complete
Click Finish

Step 3: Open the Project Folder in VS Code

Open VS Code
Click File in the top menu
Click Open Folder
Navigate to the folder where you extracted GatsbyCar
Select the folder and click Select Folder

The folder will open in VS Code. On the left side, you will see the file structure:

src/ — source code
content/ — content files
static/ — static files
package.json — dependencies
gatsby-config.js — configuration
and other files

Step 4: Open the Terminal in VS Code

VS Code has a built-in terminal. This is where you will run commands.

In VS Code, click Terminal in the top menu
Click New Terminal
A terminal panel will open at the bottom of VS Code

You can also use a keyboard shortcut:

Windows / Linux: Ctrl + backtick
Mac: Cmd + backtick

The backtick key is usually located below the Escape key.

Step 5: Install Dependencies

Now you need to install all the packages that GatsbyCar requires.

In the terminal, type:

npm install

Press Enter. This will download all required packages from the npm registry.

You will see a progress bar. The installation may take 2 to 5 minutes depending on your internet speed. Wait until it finishes.

When complete, you will see a message like:

added 1547 packages in 3m

If you see errors, check the Common Issues section below.

Step 6: Start the Development Server

After the installation completes, type:

npm start

Press Enter. Gatsby will start the development server.

You will see output like:

success open and validate gatsby-configs - 0.054s
success load plugins - 1.196s
success onPreInit - 0.024s
success initialize cache - 0.138s
success createSchemaCustomization - 0.013s
success source and transform nodes - 0.654s
success building schema - 0.415s

You can now view gatsbycar in the browser.

  http://localhost:8000/

The line http://localhost:8000/ is your local website address. localhost means your own computer.

Step 7: View Your Website

Open your browser
Type http://localhost:8000 in the address bar
Press Enter

You will see the GatsbyCar theme running on your computer. This is your live preview. Any change you make to the code will refresh automatically.

Step 8: Stop the Development Server

When you are done working, go back to the terminal in VS Code and press:

Ctrl + C

This stops the development server. You can restart it anytime by typing npm start again.

Common Issues and Solutions

Issue: "node: command not found" or "npm: command not found"

This means Node.js is not installed or not added to your system PATH.

Solution:

Reinstall Node.js from https://nodejs.org
During installation, make sure "Add to PATH" is checked
Restart your computer
Try again

Issue: "npm install" fails with permission errors

On Mac or Linux, you may need to run with elevated permissions.

Solution:

sudo npm install

On Windows, run VS Code as Administrator.

Issue: "npm install" fails with network errors

Your internet connection may be unstable.

Solution:

Check your internet connection
Try again
If it keeps failing, use a different network

Issue: Port 8000 is already in use

Another application is using port 8000.

Solution:

npm start -- --port 8001

Then open http://localhost:8001 instead.

Issue: "gatsby: command not found"

Gatsby CLI is not installed globally.

Solution: You do not need it. Use npm start instead, which calls Gatsby locally.

Issue: Changes don't appear in browser

Solution:

Refresh the browser
Check the terminal for errors
Restart the development server with Ctrl + C then npm start

What Is Happening Behind the Scenes

When you run npm start, Gatsby does the following:

Reads all content files (JSON, Markdown)
Builds a GraphQL schema from your data
Creates pages for each car and blog post
Compiles React components
Starts a local web server on port 8000
Watches for file changes and rebuilds automatically

This is called development mode. When you are ready to publish, you will run npm run build to create the production version.

Initial Configuration

Before deploying your website, you need to configure a few settings. This guide will walk you through each one.

Files You Will Edit

You will edit these files:

gatsby-config.js — main Gatsby configuration
content/data/widget.json — site-wide data (nav, footer, contact)
content/data/home.json — homepage content
content/data/contact.json — contact page content
content/data/about.json — about page content

Do not worry if this looks like a lot. Each file is explained step by step.

Step 1: Configure gatsby-config.js

Open gatsby-config.js in VS Code.

Running Decap CMS Locally

Decap CMS is a headless content management system that lets you edit your website content without touching code. This guide will show you how to run it on your computer.

What Is Decap CMS

Decap CMS (formerly Netlify CMS) is an open-source CMS that works with Git-based websites. It provides a visual admin panel where you can:

Edit text content
Upload images
Create new cars or blog posts
Manage navigation menus
Update site settings

All changes are saved directly to your content files. No database required.

Why Two Terminals

You need two terminal windows running at the same time:

Terminal 1 — Runs the Gatsby server (your website preview)
Terminal 2 — Runs the Decap CMS proxy server (the admin panel authentication)

They work together but run as separate processes. If you close one, the other will not work properly.

Important: Development vs Production Mode

There is a critical difference between gatsby develop and gatsby serve when accessing the CMS admin panel:

Command	CMS Accessible?	Why
`npm start` (gatsby develop)	No — returns 404	Gatsby develop server does not serve static HTML files from the `static/` folder
`npm run build` + `npm run serve`	Yes	The production server serves all files from `public/`, including `admin/index.html`

This means: To use Decap CMS locally, you must run gatsby build and gatsby serve, not gatsby develop.

This is a known behavior of Gatsby. It is not a bug in GatsbyCar.

Prerequisites

Before starting, make sure:

Node.js is installed (from Documentation 2)
Dependencies are installed (npm install already run)
The project folder is open in VS Code

Step 1: Open Two Terminals in VS Code

Open VS Code with your GatsbyCar project folder
Click Terminal in the top menu
Click New Terminal
A terminal panel opens at the bottom
Click the + icon in the terminal panel to create a second terminal

You will now see two terminal tabs:

bash (or powershell) — Terminal 1
bash (or powershell) — Terminal 2

Click each tab to switch between them.

Step 2: Build the Site in Terminal 1

Click on Terminal 1 (the first tab).

Type:

npm run build

Press Enter. Wait until you see:

success Building static HTML for pages - 4.746s - 91/91 19.17/s
info Done building in 40.459890932 sec

This creates the public/ folder with all your production files, including admin/index.html.

Step 3: Serve the Site in Terminal 1

After the build completes, type:

npm run serve

Press Enter. Wait until you see:

You can now view gatsbycar in the browser.

  http://localhost:9000/

Note: The URL is localhost:9000, not localhost:8000. The serve command uses a different port.

Leave this terminal running. Do not close it.

Step 4: Start Decap CMS Proxy in Terminal 2

Click on Terminal 2 (the second tab).

Type:

npx decap-server

Press Enter. Wait until you see:

Decap CMS Proxy Server listening on port 8081

Leave this terminal running too. Do not close it.

Step 5: Access the Admin Panel

Open your browser and go to:

http://localhost:9000/admin/

Important: Use localhost:9000, not localhost:8000. The /admin/ path only works on the serve port.

You will see the Decap CMS login page.

In local development mode, you do not need to log in. The proxy server handles authentication automatically. You will be taken directly to the admin dashboard.

Step 6: Explore the Admin Panel

Once logged in, you will see the Decap CMS dashboard. The left sidebar shows these collections:

Click any collection to start editing.

Step 7: Edit Your First Content

Let's change the homepage title as a test.

Click Home Page in the left sidebar
Click Content Home Page
Find the Title field
Change the text to your website name
Click Save in the top right corner

Now open a new browser tab at http://localhost:9000 and refresh. Your new title should appear immediately.

Step 8: Upload an Image

Let's try uploading a logo.

Click Widget Setting in the left sidebar
Find the Logo Image field
Click Choose an image
Select an image file from your computer
Wait for the upload to complete
Click Save

The image is now saved to your project. The path is automatically updated in widget.json.

Step 9: Create a New Car Listing

Let's add a new car to your fleet.

Click Cars (Fleet) in the left sidebar
Click New Car at the top of the page
Fill in the fields:

Let's write a blog article.

Click Blog Posts in the left sidebar
Click New Post
Fill in the fields:

Click Save
Click Publish

The article will appear on your blog page immediately.

How the Workflow Works

When you save in Decap CMS, here is what happens:

Content is updated in the JSON or Markdown file
The Decap CMS proxy server commits the change to your local repository
You need to rebuild the site (npm run build) to see the change in serve mode
In develop mode, changes are automatic

Note: Because CMS works best with serve mode, you need to rebuild after each content change. If you want automatic rebuilds, use gatsby develop and access the CMS at /admin/ (which returns 404 — see the "Important" section above).

The compromise: Use gatsby develop for coding and design work. Use gatsby build && gatsby serve when you need to edit content through the CMS.

Stopping the Servers

When you are done:

Go to Terminal 1 and press Ctrl + C to stop the serve server
Go to Terminal 2 and press Ctrl + C to stop Decap CMS

You can restart both anytime by following steps 2 through 4 again.

Common Issues and Solutions

Issue: /admin/ returns 404

This is expected behavior in gatsby develop mode. Gatsby does not serve static HTML files from static/ during development.

Solution: Use npm run build && npm run serve and access http://localhost:9000/admin/.

Issue: Port 8081 is already in use

Another Decap CMS server is already running.

Solution:

Close all terminals
Restart VS Code
Try again

Issue: Port 9000 is already in use

Another process is using port 9000.

Solution:

npm run serve -- --port 9001

Then access http://localhost:9001/admin/.

Issue: Changes do not appear on the website

In serve mode, changes require a rebuild.

Solution: Stop the server (Ctrl + C), run npm run build, then npm run serve again.

Issue: Image upload fails

Solution:

Check that media_folder and public_folder in static/admin/config.yml are correct
Make sure the static/images/ folder exists
Check that you have write permission to the folder

Issue: "Cannot find module 'decap-server'"

Solution: Install the Decap CMS server globally or use npx:

npx decap-server

Issue: Admin page shows blank screen

Solution:

Check browser console for errors (F12)
Check Terminal 2 for proxy server errors
Restart both terminals

Issue: Cannot log in

In local development mode, no login is required. If you see a login page:

Make sure Terminal 2 is running npx decap-server
Check that config.yml has local_backend: true
Try refreshing the page

Which Command Should I Use?

Task	Command
Writing code, editing CSS, adding features	`npm start`
Editing content through CMS	`npm run build && npm run serve`
Preview final production build	`npm run build && npm run serve`
Quick test after content change	`npm start` (content only appears if you rebuild)

Recommendation: During development, use npm start for coding. When you need to edit content via CMS, switch to npm run build && npm run serve. This is the standard workflow for Gatsby + Decap CMS projects.

Understanding the Difference

gatsby develop (npm start):

Fast rebuilds as you edit code
Hot module reloading
Does not serve static HTML files
CMS at /admin/ returns 404

gatsby build && gatsby serve (npm run build && npm run serve):

Slow rebuilds, requires manual restart
No hot reloading
Serves all files from public/
CMS at /admin/ works

Push to GitHub

GitHub is a platform for hosting and version-controlling code. In this guide, you will create a GitHub account, set up a repository, and push your GatsbyCar project.

This step is required before deploying to Netlify, because Netlify pulls your code from GitHub.

Why GitHub

GitHub serves three purposes for your GatsbyCar project:

Backup — your code is stored safely online
Version control — you can track changes and revert if needed
Deployment source — Netlify pulls code from GitHub to build your website

Without GitHub, you cannot use Decap CMS in production mode. Decap CMS uses Git Gateway to commit changes back to your repository.

Step 1: Create a GitHub Account

If you already have a GitHub account, skip to Step 2.

Open your browser and go to https://github.com
Click Sign up in the top right corner
Enter your email address
Create a password (at least 15 characters, or 8 characters with a number and lowercase letter)
Enter a username (this will be part of your repository URL)
Complete the verification puzzle
Click Create account
Check your email for a verification code
Enter the code on GitHub
Complete the onboarding questions (you can skip most of them)

Your GitHub account is now ready.

Step 2: Install Git

Git is a version control tool that GitHub uses. You need it installed on your computer.

Check if Git is already installed:

Open your terminal in VS Code and type:

git --version

If you see something like git version 2.40.0, Git is installed. Skip to Step 3.

If Git is not installed:

For Windows:

Go to https://git-scm.com/download/win
Download the installer
Run it and follow the wizard
Keep all default settings
Click Finish
Restart VS Code

For Mac:

Open Terminal
Type git --version
If not installed, macOS will prompt you to install Command Line Tools
Click Install
Wait for the installation to complete

For Linux:

sudo apt install git

Verify installation:

git --version

Step 3: Configure Git

Set your Git identity. This will be attached to every commit you make.

In your terminal, type:

git config --global user.name "Your Name"

Press Enter. Replace Your Name with your actual name.

Then type:

git config --global user.email "your@email.com"

Press Enter. Replace your@email.com with your GitHub email.

Verify your configuration:

git config --list

You should see your name and email listed.

Step 4: Create a New Repository on GitHub

Log in to GitHub at https://github.com
Click the + icon in the top right corner
Click New repository

Fill in the form:

Repository name

Example: gatsbycar or my-car-rental-site
Use lowercase letters and hyphens
No spaces

Description (optional)

Example: Car rental website built with Gatsby and Decap CMS

Visibility

Select Public or Private
Public — anyone can see your code (recommended for open source)
Private — only you can see your code (recommended if you want to keep it secret)

Initialize this repository with:

Leave all checkboxes unchecked
Do not add README, .gitignore, or license

Click Create repository.

You will see a page with setup instructions. Keep this page open.

Step 5: Initialize Git in Your Project

Open VS Code with your GatsbyCar project folder.

Open the terminal and make sure you are in the project root folder. Type:

pwd

You should see your project path, like /Users/yourname/projects/gatsbycar.

Initialize Git:

git init

You should see:

Initialized empty Git repository in /path/to/gatsbycar/.git/

Step 6: Check the .gitignore File

A .gitignore file tells Git which files to ignore. GatsbyCar already includes one.

Open .gitignore in VS Code. It should contain:

.cache/
public/
node_modules/
.DS_Store
*.log

This means Git will not track those folders. That is correct — you do not want to commit node_modules or build output.

If .gitignore does not exist, create it in the project root with the content above.

Step 7: Stage All Files

Stage all files for the first commit:

git add .

The dot (.) means "add all files in the current directory".

Check what will be committed:

git status

You will see a list of files in green — these are staged for commit.

Step 8: Create the First Commit

Commit the staged files with a message:

git commit -m "Initial commit"

You should see output like:

[main (root-commit) abc1234] Initial commit
 150 files changed, 12000 insertions(+)
 create mode 100644 gatsby-config.js
 ...

Step 9: Connect to GitHub Repository

Go back to your GitHub repository page. You will see commands under "…or push an existing repository from the command line".

Copy the URL that looks like:

https://github.com/your-username/gatsbycar.git

In your VS Code terminal, type:

git remote add origin https://github.com/your-username/gatsbycar.git

Replace your-username and gatsbycar with your actual values.

Verify the remote:

git remote -v

You should see:

origin  https://github.com/your-username/gatsbycar.git (fetch)
origin  https://github.com/your-username/gatsbycar.git (push)

Step 10: Push to GitHub

Rename your local branch to main (GitHub uses main as the default):

git branch -M main

Push your commit to GitHub:

git push -u origin main

You may be asked to authenticate. GitHub no longer accepts passwords for Git operations. You need a Personal Access Token.

Step 11: Create a Personal Access Token

If the push fails with an authentication error, follow these steps:

Go to https://github.com/settings/tokens
Click Generate new token
Click Generate new token (classic)
Enter a note, like GatsbyCar project
Set expiration to No expiration or 90 days
Check the repo checkbox (this grants full repository access)
Click Generate token at the bottom
Copy the token immediately — you will not see it again

When Git prompts for password:

Username: your GitHub username
Password: paste the Personal Access Token

Save the token somewhere safe. You will need it again.

Alternative: Use GitHub Desktop

If you prefer a visual interface, download GitHub Desktop at https://desktop.github.com. It handles authentication automatically.

Step 12: Verify the Push

Go back to your GitHub repository page
Refresh the page
You should see all your files listed
The commit message "Initial commit" should appear

Your code is now on GitHub.

Step 13: Make Future Changes

After the initial setup, the workflow for future changes is:

git add .
git commit -m "Describe your changes"
git push

Example:

git add .
git commit -m "Update homepage content"
git push

Every time you run git push, your changes go to GitHub. If you have Netlify connected, it will automatically rebuild your website.

Common Issues and Solutions

Issue: "fatal: not a git repository"

Solution: You are not in the project folder. Run cd to navigate to the project root, or reopen the folder in VS Code.

Issue: "Permission denied (publickey)"

Solution: Use HTTPS instead of SSH. Change the remote:

git remote set-url origin https://github.com/your-username/gatsbycar.git

Issue: "Authentication failed"

Solution: Use a Personal Access Token instead of password (see Step 11).

Issue: "Failed to push some refs"

Solution: The remote has changes you do not have locally. Pull first:

git pull origin main --rebase
git push

Issue: "Nothing to commit, working tree clean"

Solution: You have not made any changes since the last commit. Check git status.

Issue: Committed node_modules by mistake

Solution: Add node_modules/ to .gitignore, then:

git rm -r --cached node_modules
git commit -m "Remove node_modules"
git push

Best Practices

Commit often Make small commits with clear messages. Instead of one giant commit, commit each feature or fix separately.

Write clear commit messages

Good: Add Rolls-Royce Phantom to fleet
Bad: Update

Pull before pushing If you work on multiple computers, always git pull before git push to avoid conflicts.

Keep .gitignore updated If you add new files that should not be tracked, add them to .gitignore.

Do not commit secrets Never commit API keys, passwords, or private tokens. If you accidentally commit one, rotate it immediately.

Deploy to Netlify

Netlify is the recommended hosting platform for GatsbyCar because it has built-in support for Decap CMS. This guide will walk you through deploying your website and setting up the CMS admin panel.

Step 1: Create a Netlify Account

Open your browser and go to https://www.netlify.com
Click Sign up in the top right
Choose Sign up with GitHub
Authorize Netlify to access your GitHub account
Complete the onboarding

Step 2: Import Your Repository

From the Netlify dashboard, click Add new site
Click Import an existing project
Click Deploy with GitHub
Authorize Netlify if prompted
Find and select your gatsbycar repository
Click it to select

Step 3: Configure Build Settings

Netlify will show build settings. Configure them as follows:

Branch to deploy

main (or your default branch)

Build command

npm run build

Publish directory

public

Environment variables (optional)

NODE_VERSION — set to 18 or 20 if build fails

Click Deploy site.

Step 4: Wait for the First Build

Netlify will start building your site. This takes 2 to 5 minutes.

You can watch the build progress. When complete, you will see:

Site is live

Your site is now available at a URL like:

https://random-name-12345.netlify.app

Step 5: Change the Site Name

Go to Site configuration → Site details
Click Change site name
Enter your preferred name, like gatsbycar
Click Save

Your site is now at:

https://gatsbycar.netlify.app

Step 6: Update Your Site URL

Open gatsby-config.js in VS Code.

Update siteUrl:

siteUrl: `https://gatsbycar.netlify.app/`,

Commit and push:

git add .
git commit -m "Update site URL"
git push

Netlify will rebuild automatically.

Step 7: Enable Netlify Identity

Netlify Identity manages CMS admin users. It lets people log in to Decap CMS without having GitHub accounts.

In Netlify dashboard, go to your site
Click Integrations in the top menu
Find Identity and click Enable Identity
Go to Identity → Configuration and usage

Registration settings:

Select Invite only (recommended)
This means only people you invite can access the CMS

External providers (optional):

Check GitHub if you want editors to log in with GitHub
Check Google for Google login

Step 8: Enable Git Gateway

Git Gateway allows Decap CMS to read and write to your GitHub repository without giving editors direct GitHub access.

In Netlify dashboard, go to Identity → Services
Find Git Gateway
Click Enable Git Gateway
Leave the Roles field blank (allows all Identity users to access CMS)

Netlify will generate an API token automatically.

Step 9: Update config.yml for Production

Open static/admin/config.yml.

Make sure the backend section looks like this:

  name: git-gateway
  branch: main

Important: If your repository default branch is master, change branch to master.

Do not add repo field — Git Gateway handles that automatically.

Commit and push:

git add .
git commit -m "Update Decap CMS config"
git push

Step 10: Invite Yourself as CMS User

In Netlify dashboard, go to Identity
Click Invite users
Enter your email address
Click Send

You will receive an email invitation. Click the link to set your password.

Step 11: Access the CMS Admin Panel

Open your browser
Go to https://gatsbycar.netlify.app/admin/
You will see the Decap CMS login page
Click Log in with Netlify Identity
Enter your email and password

You are now in the CMS dashboard.

Step 12: Test CMS in Production

Let's verify everything works.

Click Home Page in the sidebar
Edit the Title field
Click Save
Click Publish

Netlify will detect the commit and rebuild your site. Wait 1 to 3 minutes.

Refresh your website. Your change should appear.

How the Production Workflow Works

When you save in Decap CMS (production mode):

CMS commits changes to your GitHub repository via Git Gateway
Netlify detects the new commit
Netlify rebuilds your Gatsby site
Changes go live on your domain

This happens automatically. You do not need to do anything manually.

Step 13: Add a Custom Domain (Optional)

Go to Site configuration → Domain management
Click Add a domain
Enter your domain name, like mycarrental.com
Follow Netlify's instructions to update your DNS
Netlify will provision an SSL certificate automatically

Once set up, update siteUrl in gatsby-config.js to match your custom domain.

Common Issues and Solutions

Issue: Build fails with "Node version not supported"

Solution: Add an environment variable:

Go to Site configuration → Environment variables
Add NODE_VERSION with value 18 or 20
Trigger a new deploy

Issue: "Your Git Gateway backend is not returning valid settings"

Solution: This means Git Gateway is not enabled or configured correctly.

Go to Identity → Services
Check that Git Gateway is enabled
Check that branch in config.yml matches your default branch (main or master)

Issue: CMS login page does not appear

Solution: Check that /admin/ route exists:

Go to https://yoursite.netlify.app/admin/
If 404, check that static/admin/index.html exists
Check that static/admin/config.yml exists

Issue: "Cannot commit to repository"

Solution: Git Gateway token may have expired:

Go to Identity → Services
Click Git Gateway settings
Regenerate the access token
Save

Issue: Changes in CMS do not appear on site

Solution:

Check Netlify dashboard → Deploys for build errors
Wait a few minutes for rebuild
Hard refresh browser with Ctrl + Shift + R

Issue: Build succeeds but site shows 404

Solution: Check Publish directory:

Go to Site configuration → Build & deploy
Check that Publish directory is public
Trigger a new deploy

Keep descriptions short SEO descriptions should be under 160 characters. Anything longer gets cut off in search results.

Use WebP images WebP images are smaller and load faster than JPG or PNG. Convert your images before uploading.

Compress images before upload Large images slow down your website. Aim for under 200 KB per image.

Use descriptive file names Instead of IMG_1234.jpg, use mercedes-s-class.jpg. This helps with SEO.

Write meaningful tags Tags like car-rental and business are better than tag1 and tag2.
